The construction industry faces many challenges, and we need the right calibre of people to address this.
Perception: The industry has a perception issue, the industry has always had this perception issue. The general public loves programs like Rogue Traders, which ran for 9 years, and Dom Littlewoods Cowboy Builders which had 11 seasons. Add to this the perception of all builders being white van man or Bob the Builder and all the hard work we do, as an industry and as the professional side of the industry is not seen or understood by the public.
The industry is not visible, our careers are not visible, and the education pathways are not visible. We need to improve this.
We need to challenge what we have always done with careers engagement and interfaces with school and A-level students. If we do not change, we will get the same results. Traditional careers fairs are great, but we need to take it to the next step. We need to present to school groups on all careers in construction. We need to create a clear understanding of the multiple roles and the educational pathways that can be followed.
